I have to laugh that as soon as Betsy and I set a deadline for this project, we both completely floundered in getting our spreads done. For me, it took four months [FOUR MONTHS] to get around to this spread. Yikes! I told Bets, its been so long since I’ve done a spread in this journal that my style has completely changed. This spread is just acrylic and watercolor crayon, with black ink. It took several, several layers to build up to the color/quality I wanted. I love that a little sandpaper over the dark parts reveals the lighter color underneath. The quote on the opposite page reads “The distance is nothing, it is only the first step that is difficult.”

The title of this photo is, “The path is coming into focus”. I shot it out in the woods when were out walking trails. As the day ended, the light turned magical as it filtered in through the leaves. I spent several minutes trying in vain to capture how wonderful it was to have light beams streaking in on the path. But it wasn’t until I flipped the camera into manual and started shooting out of focus that I got what I was after. The Douglas Adam’s quote on Katie’s spread immediately brought this shot to mind.
Her spread said:
“I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think that I have ended up where I needed to be.”
I think that the idea of PATH is what I latched on to. I’ve been on a search for some details in my personal life. Some things are ending and others are starting. Capturing beauty and clarity can be elusive in a season of searching, but this photo reminds me that not knowing carries a beauty all its own.
My friend Diana Harrison wrote this poem in response to the photo:
Path On The Other Side
At times life may seem to be a blur
our priorities out of focus, with
no direction to their end. Making
confusion our guidance and
controlling the messages that
we send.
But always remember that through
all the blurry surroundings there
is a path allowing your true journey to begin.
Here it is added to the next back & forth spread:

Confession: I started this spread without really having a clue what I wanted it to look like, feel like or say [bad idea, and I knew better ...] I put the first layers of paint on, collaged some tissue … and hated it. Let it sit for over two weeks. Added a different layer of color, adding a new layer of collage, and let it sit more.
Then, magically, I was talking to Rowan last night. I shared with him my angst over this spread, and his response reminded me of this quote. I sanded down some of the top layers and added the text to what was already there. I like this quote, too, because it’s reappeared several times this week from different sources.
So here’s my spread, which inadvertently exemplified Betsy’s previous page … [shift is not the enemy!]
[quote is Douglas Adams, I forgot to put that on the page - I'm looking sheepishly at Bets right now :]]
{ps – remember that deadline that Betsy mentioned in the last post? yeah, totally blew that. there’s grace in the process, right?}

And now, walking into the party fashionably late…
back&forth project Spread #3
Late, like a couple of weeks late… this spread took some time. I’m still exploring why it became a time issue because there was no new technique or method. Nor were there any big challenges from a design point-of-view. I believe that this double-page spread was quite simply, a process-oriented artistic experience. It was about more than the final product; it was about the path along the way. Amongst the design elements that carried over – purple, black & quotes – I also managed to carry over some of the emotional wrestling that often happens in the creative process.
For Katie, the idea with tension was “trying something new”. From subsequent discussions, I know that she 1.) was captured by a quote 2.) made art around that quote and 3.) continues to process how she approaches The New. As I looked for the carry-over elements for the transition, I dove into the quote that Katie chose. And, as I thought about how I approach new things, I ended up at the related concept of change. My thought sequence went something like this:
1. How do I approach new things?
2. What are new things?
3. Sometimes you get a new thing and it’s really old. Like when you buy the exact same brand of pen or pasta that you’ve bought for years. It’s new but it’s predictable. No surprises.
4. Sometimes a new thing is something different. Full of unpredictability and learning curve. (This makes me feel squirmy…)
5. I like new stuff that’s predictable. Stuff that’s shiny but doesn’t approach my threshold for discomfort.
6. The second kind of new is really new. It’s shiny AND bouncy; it’s less easy to anticipate and control. (That one puts me at the end of my threshold for comfort – hence the squirminess…)
7. The second kind of new is full of change.
8. Change pushes my buttons.
And so I started looking for words and pictures around the idea of change. I kept some elements. Partly because that is what Katie and I agreed to do – take formation clues from the previous page. But I also kept some of the same elements because sometimes when I do something new, I like for part of it to be old and familiar. I often mix my New with a little bit of Old for comfort.
Here’s Spread #3. I picked up the purple and ran with it. (I think Katie and I may have the same Windsor & Newton tubes of acrylic). I also pulled over some black from her silhouette and added a favorite quote from my friend Candi Dickerson. Oh, and I added a deadline. Look for back&forth project Spread #4 in two weeks. I confessed to Katie that I’ll “stay in process” for way too long without a hard deadline.
Enjoy,

Jumping into this spread was so much more difficult than I had expected! I battled lots of fears to get this color on the page: fear of Betsy not liking it, of nobody ‘getting’ it, of it being too scattered, too ‘much’, too odd. I like to be assured of the outcome of the things that I attempt. I have often been accused of taking a “Ready … Aim … Aim … Aim …” stance in my life. I don’t often take explosive action. I don’t often try new things.
Then Betsy sends me a beautiful spread surrounding the idea of daring to dream new Dreams. As I was pondering what that looked like in my own life, I happened upon an article about Marissa Mayer, a female creative exec for Google. She had a quote in the article that I fell in love with, because it embodied so many of my thoughts about my own fear. So my pages were born around that quote – it answered, for me, the questions that Betsy’s pages raised in me.
Okay, enough words, onto an image: collaged ink sketch + acrylic paint + handwritten text + type-written text

About fifteen minutes after I put the final touches on these pages, I found myself muttering the words, “I never really try new things!” with a little laugh. I caught myself in that phrase, then quickly wondered if journaling can work retroactively. Yikes bikes.

I’ve started a new project with my new friend Katie Holley. Working title:
“Back & Forth with Katie & Betsy”
This is the first page. It just seemed right for a first journal page to be about new dreams and fresh starts. The seedling photo is an iPhone photo of a Mammoth Sunflower. I like that the photo was a little blurry and imperfect – even before I sanded it. The plant will be 7ft. tall. I also like that even though it will eventually be HUGE, it has to start out small just like every other flower. Just like every dream, no matter how grandiose.
I created this page when I was supposed to be packing for our beach trip. Just so you know, I am an expert packer. I pack just-enough-not-too-much and have a knack for emergency supplies. (Why yes, I do have splinter tweezers and gallon size zipper bags.) However, for this trip, I opted to throw basics in a suitcase the morning of. The night before belonged to the muse.
I have more to share. Thoughts on collaboration. Thoughts on finishing. And a few thoughts on dreaming. But for now, here’s the page:

This blog chronicles the journey of the Back&Forth Project; a collaborative journal of Betsy Garmon and Katie Holley. Each new page takes it’s formation cues from the page before. It’s a challenging and exciting project that we’re delighted to share with each other and, through this blog, with the world! [or whoever happens to stumble in here ...]
Come back soon to see how we’re progressing and hear our thoughts on the process.
Excited!
